So let us clarify, Vivekananda never discouraged reading books. In fact he was a voracious reader himself. He had interest in almost all subjects related to human life. In November 1890, when Vivekananda (then known as Narendranath Datta) was staying at Meerut, he used to borrow and read one book from local library every day. In his later life, he reportedly read the first 10 volumes of the then newly published Encyclopædia Britannica (more details).
