12 January 2014: Swami Vivekananda's 151st Birth Anniversary Celebration Events And Programs

12 January 2014 — 151st birth anniversary (or birth day) of Swami Vivekananda— once again the day has come when the nation will celebrate the day and remember Swami Vivekananda and his teachings through various festivals and events.

What is happening in 2014?

Last year (2013), which was Vivekananda's 150th birth anniversary, hundreds of events and programs were organised worldwide. Celebration of Swamiji's 150th birth anniversary began in 2012. In that year a special 3-day World Congress of Religions conference was organised by the Institute of World Religions (of the Washington Kali Temple), Burtonsville, Maryland to commemorate the birth anniversary event. The 150th birth-anniversary's year-long celebration is officially going to end on this 12 January 2014.

So how are people going to celebrate Vivekananda's birth anniversary this year? Which functions and events are going to be organized to commemorate this day? Let's see.

In India

Ramakrishna Math and Mission's celebration and events, India

Like every year this year too Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission Mission will celebrate Swami Vivekananda's birth anniversary. A special event will be organized at Belur Math.

Swami Vivekananda's birth anniversary is going to be celebrated in all other Ramamkrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission branches and centres too. 

Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Kolkata

Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Golpark, Kolkata is going to organise a-day long classical music event at their centre. In this event maestros and performers like Tanmoy Bose (Tabla), Alam Khan (Sarod), Hari Prasad Chaurasia (flute) will participate.

 Vivek Chetana Utsav, Kolkata

To mark the closing of Vivekananda's 150th birth anniversary year-long celebration, from 5—12 January (2014) the government of West Bengal is going to organise a special event named "Vivek Chetana". A special public function and a padayatra will be organized on Red Road, Kolkata on 10 January (2014). In this function thousands of students and youths will participate. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself will join the padayatra. The State Government has planned to donate 115 ambulances to Ramakrishna Mission during this event.[Ref]


Vivek Mela, Harish Park, Kolkata

Vivek Mela is going to be organised in Harish Park, Kolkata. The festival will begin on 5 January 2014.

14th Dalai Lama to unveil Swami Vivekananda's statue on 7 January 2014, Coimbatore

The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, will come to India in the beginning of January 2014. He will be a chief guest of the 150th birth centenary celebrations of Vivekananda, organised by Mounasadhu Swami Satyanand Maharaj of Aruppukottai. During the ceremony Dalai Lama will inaugurate a statue of Vivekananda. The statue is 7 feet 9 inch tall and it is made of "Makrana" Marble.[Source]

INDGenius Youth Convention-2014, Bengaluru

INDGenius Youth Convention-2014 "Uttishth Bharat" will be hosted at Bengaluru on 10, 11 and 12 January. Online registration may be done here.

Vivekananda cultural centre, Chennai, Tamil Nadu

According to a news article published in The Hindu on 30 December 2013, a cultural centre dedicated to Swami Vivekananda would be opened in Triplicane, Chennai, in the beginning of 2014. The centre will be named "Vivekananda cultural centre". The centre will offer courses on meditation, yoga, Vedanta, Swami Vivekananda's teachings. The foundation stone of the centre was laid by the state's chief minister Jayalalitha.[Ref]

Annual conference of Bharatiya Chhatra Sansad, Pune

4th annual conference of Bharatiya Chhatra Sansad will be held in 10–12 January at MAEERS's MIT Campus, Pune. The "mandap" of the vent is named "Swami Vivekananda Mandap".

Outside India

Pakistani Hindus are going to celebrate Swamiji's birth anniversary, (Karachi, Pakistan)

This is surely an exciting news. According to a news article published in The Times of India, for the first time after Indian's independence and partition of India, Hindus of Pakistan are going to celebrate Swami Vivekananda's birth anniversary. On 7 January a special function will be organized at Radha Krishan temple, Karachi (the largest Hindu temple of the city), where Hindu priests and religions preachers will deliver lectures. This event will be organized by Pakistan Hindu Sewa Welfare Trust  (PHSWT).[Ref]

The Vivekananda International East West Conference, (Chicago, United States)

The annual conference of the Vivekananda International East West Conference will be held on 11–12 January 2014 at the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago in Lemont, IL In this event Yoga teachers will teach Yoga, Meditation, Pranayama.
